A 92-year-old man has been charged with murder following the death of his wife, 87.

Officers from Devon and Cornwall Police were called to Millbrook Lane in Exeter, Devon, on 19 April following reports of a concern for welfare. Shirley Billam was found dead at the property.
Laurence Billam, of Millbrook Lane, appeared via video link at Exeter Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday. No plea was entered and he is due to appear next at Exeter Crown Court on Wednesday.
Police confirmed the pair were husband and wife and said the family was being supported by specialist officers.
The court heard Laurence Billam had allegedly smothered his wife at their sheltered accommodation before attempting to take his own life.
